Lost tapes
Posted: August 31, 2008, 5:40 am by Frank
Here is some stuff that I had on cassette tape from a couple of years ago that I was able to convert to mp3. I was just messing around on a home computer with a cheap mic and some demo sofware so its clearly not professional stuff. I will do some good quality stuff in the future, I've wanted to do music for a long time but keep procrastinating. In any case watch this space.

The N Word: A rapper's perspective
Posted: August 31, 2008, 4:13 am by Frank
Since the N-word is is widely and freely used among the hiphop community, I will let a rapper speak on it. Here we will see DC rapper Wale break it down in his song "The Kramer" from The Mixtape About Nothing.
"The color of my skin, content of my character,
Dream of a King's been a nightmare for anyone white with a badge,
or anyone slightly affected by the tide to this race that I'm running in,
Pardon me, y'all, the racists I run against,
The race war, when its us against all of them,
They subconsciously low talk us,
And probably all think as Kramer did still but won't talk it,
And first off, I ain't trying to be conscious,
Speaking heart with a conscience, talking to you,
This dark content for those of dark complexion,
Who's x-ed off, Rip, who gon' listen to us?
Who gon' speak for us? Who gon' plead for us?
Who gon' be the Head N.I.C. for us?
Who gon' defend us from crooked police on us?
(Chorus)
I'm just an insecure N.I.---...Please listen to me X3,
N.I.-- er...Please listen to me, who gon' listen to me?X2
N.I--. er...Listen to me, who gon' listen to me?X2
N.I.-- er...Who gon' listen to me, X2 N.I.-
Hey,And P say that I should stop saying "n---",
But if I did, what would be the difference?
I'd still be a n---, he'd still be a n--- in his feelings,
I'd still be a n--- with no deal tryna get one,
There'd still be n--- out killing,
And still be white people still out to get us,
And still be n--- saying whites tryna get us,
And still be lazy and paranoid n---,
I'm paramount, n---, I am, and you can't be mad,
Cuz I choose the word "n---", lemme air it out, n---,"
N---" ain't bad, see,
n--- just had a clever idea to take something they said, into something we have,
something we flipped, into something with swag,
n---, don't be mad,B--- ain't s---, but women ain't b---,
See, women are the queens, and b--- just b---,
And b---- say "b---" like "b---" is not offensive,
When n--- say "b---", all of a sudden, they offended,
And n--- say "n---" to a n---,
A n--- write "n---" in a lyric, expect the white boy to omit it,
The white boy spit it like he spit it,Recite it to his friends
who, by the way, ain't n---,And say "n---, n---, n---, my favorite rapper did it,"
And non-n--- friends got it with him,
Incorporate this lyric to their everyday living,
Until a black friend kinda hear it, just a tidbit,
He thinks "Aw, forget it, its so insignificant and little,
"The white boy sees this as a clearance, now its"N---, n---, n---",
every single day,And that little n--- n---, thinks its okay,
And he's the only n--- in this particular grade,
And it begins to phase him more each day,
The things they say went a little too far,
He couldn't tell the difference between an "a" or "er",
So they just keep going, saying "n---" in his face,There's nothing he can do,
he let it get away,It came to the point he couldn't look 'em in the face,
The mirror made him hurl, his reflection disgraceful,
Yeah, and make sure everything you say,Can't be held against you in any kind of way,
And any connotation is viewed many ways,Cuz under every n---, there's a little bit of Kramer,Self-hatred...I hate you...and myself...N---s..."
Methinks some people are trying to have it both ways...i.e black people can use it casually but for white people its bad. Wale seems to be forwarding that position though he did finish it with an interesting closing line. Was he endorsing or rejecting the word? to be continued. -

Here's an article on the 10th Anniversary of what's in my opinion the best album of my generation. I doubt Lauryn Hill will ever return to what we used to remember her as, but at least we have this classic to listen to and study for its a timeless classic.I've always maintained that given a few more years and albums Lauryn would have become the Bob or Stevie of our generation(which we so lack), but I'm not a coulda, woulda type person. Ten years on some have come close like Alicia Keys and recently Amy Winehouse..but none have quite reached the transcendent level of her music. I really don't watch television or listen to radio much anymore, I find my intelligence being lowered when I attempt to watch 95% of the stuff on the tube. But there are still some good broadcasts out there. One of them I enjoy is the Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU 88.5(a DC NPR station). It has interesting shows and Kojo Nnamdi is a good host. I really can't stand know-it-all,shout-in-your ear radio hosts and Kojo is none of those. He is pretty fair and balanced, knowledgable, talks issues and is generally down to earth. His show also now(finally) has a podcast.
How about you, what shows do you watch on TV or listen to on radio and would recommend that dont lower the IQ? -

Bolt crushes Johnson's 200m record!
Posted: August 20, 2008, 4:33 pm by Frank
Bolt is simply astounding. Here is M.Johnson speaking of Bolts performance
continue reading hereUsain Bolt's 200m victory in a new world record time of 19.30 seconds was simply incredible. This guy is Superman II.
When I saw the start he made to the race, I just thought 'wow'. It was a much better start than the one he made in winning the 100m - in another new world record time - on Saturday.
Guys at 6ft 5ins tall should not be able to start like that. Bolt had the slowest start in the field in the 100m but here it was better than anyone else's and there were some good starters out there.
His drive phase, his transition, his bend, his home straight - it was all simply incredible.

Video: Coming Of Age
Posted: August 13, 2008, 4:17 am by Frank
Here's a nice short documentary by Award winning writer and director Judy Kibinge.Description: "This coming of age story depicts the three ages and stages of democracy as seen through the eyes of a girl growing up. The Kenyatta era, a time of great optimism and post-independence euphoria is reflected in the innocence and naivety of the young girl. As Kenya enters its next era, of dictatorship under Daniel arap Moi, the gloom of oppression and confusion is reflected by teenage turmoil and finally, all grown up, we find ourselves in Kenyas third stage of democracy under Mwai Kibaki and wondering if democracy, with all its free speech and openness can ever really come of age."

The N Word: going full circle
Posted: August 6, 2008, 3:12 pm by Frank
Black rappers/artists and other people with influence have mainstreamed the word nigger so much that other races of people feel it's okay, normal and "cool" to use the word in their everyday speech. What type of mess is this? Recently popular rapper Nas said it's okay if Eminem called him a nigger, because Nas can also call him a cracker! O.K I am a fan of Nas' music but that's one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard an artist say.
HipHop has had probably the biggest role in making the word nigger mainstream and giving people including other races a pass to use it.
The joke is on us yet again!

Njugush no longer at Hope FM
Posted: August 6, 2008, 2:36 pm by Frank
This from mwafrikaKenya's leading Christian radio channel continues to see more movement amongst
its presenters. Popular drive-time presenter Njugush (also of Homeboyz Radio),
and most recently host of Route 104 recently went off air as he pursues other
ministry opportunities. His position has now been taken over by Justus Owaka.
Similarly, afternoon presenter JM (Justus Mwakideu) also left the station and is
headed for an upcoming radio broadcaster. His position has now been taken over
by George Gichuru.I'd just like to say, Njugush is someone who has helped me grow as a Christian just by listening to his show. I have literally grown up(since late teens) listening to him since the Metro FM days. When I was still a new Christian his show was a big help in my life.
::KC blog:: wishes him all the best in his new ministry work and many more blessings to come!

A Kenyan's view on Black In America
Posted: August 4, 2008, 5:02 am by Frank
Here is an interesting article by David Karanja and Andy Karanja on the recent CNN Presents: Black in America series.
I had been asking myself this question quite a lot in the weeks leading up to the premier of CNN Presents: Black in America. The truth is I have always wanted to explore this topic since my early childhood. Although I am black I have never truly experienced a stereotypical “black lifestyle”. I live in the suburbs surrounded mostly by Caucasians’ and I’m used to being the unique black kid in the class and people just seem to see me as an equal. Similar to some of the more successful African-Americans I saw on the show, I have heard a great deal from my black peers that I am too white. In the elementary school that I attended, I was usually the only black kid in class so I veered away from African-American culture. My parlance and dialect closely imitated that of Midwestern Americans. Prior to watching Black in America, being black simply meant proving oneself by working harder than my classmates. Watching the show seemed to give me a bit of a clearer picture however many more questions have popped into my head on the matter. There were many statistics on the show that were truly mind blowing and many stories that were just unbelievable.
The story that blew me away the most was that of two brothers growing up in the same household in the same dirty streets with completely different fates. One went to Harvard, wrote many books, and became a preacher, and the other got caught up in the “black lifestyle” and became imprisoned. It seemed like a Hollywood pitch to me more than reality. I started to wonder how that’s possible at all, they both had about the same opportunities, the same support and everything but both end up on completely different sides of the totem poll. For more information about this click here.
After seeing the following statistic in the same article I was no longer surprised: “In 2000, there were 791,600 black men in jail or prison, while only 603,032 were enrolled in colleges or universities.”(CNN.com) When I heard this I started to think how someone get caught up in this lifestyle. Then I watched more and more of the show and started to ask myself “How does an individual not get caught up in all of this?” The truth is it seems like the children growing up in the “hood” are constantly being bombarded from all sides. Things like: bad role models, no father-figures, mothers who work many jobs, not much money, streets full of gang banging and just straight up violence and the media which makes some feel like the only way out is thug life, rapping or athletics. All those things are examples of things that can get kids off-track and make them think that they’re brains are of no use to them.
In closing, I would like to go back to the question I started this paper with: What does it mean to be black in America? It means what you want it to mean! Wake up people! As people we need to follow the words’ of Barack Obama and change but that change starts inside us. We need to stop making excuses for ourselves. -
Music Seen! Nneka - "No Longer At Ease"
Posted: August 3, 2008, 11:07 pm by Frank
Another exciting new artist (that I admittedly randomly discovered on a blog) is Nigerian born artist Nneka Egbuna. Now currently based in Germany, Nneka has released 2 albums and an EP, with her debut album "Victim of Truth" garnering critical acclaim. Though relatively still unknown, she is very talented and her fame can only grow. She is already being compared to Lauryn Hill(I wouldn't go that far...yet), but she is reminiscent of L-Boogie(in her spiritual, political musical style). She also seems to be continuing in the spirit of Fela Kuti.
Which brings me to her latest album "No Longer At Ease." based on Chinua Achebe's book of the same name. I consider it an even better, more complete album than her debut. The album opens on a serious melodic note, with the haunting "Death Intro" but quickly jumps into the great single "Heartbeat" where she creates an infectious chorus by extending the words repetitively.(review continued..)"Suffri" is another good cut on the album dealing with the Nigerian life and the countrys shortcomings. On the song "Halfcast" a nice talk-rap song she talks about her mixed-racial heritage head on with an honesty rarely heard in music. She collaborates with Pat Attah for the groovy reggae jam “Something to Say” which is one of my favorite cuts on the album. “From Africa 2 U” is a beautiful dedication song to her home Africa and is sure to invoke the beauty of the motherland in you. Things then slow down a bit on “Running Away” an ode to her love of music and feature a nice swaying melodic electric guitar.
What really impress me about Nneka are her vocal abilities which are different from the norm, in that she extends and delivers her vocals in a way that reels you into what she’s expressing. Her lyrics are also almost prodigious for someone her age (27), she is very deep and poetic. the way she tackles politics, life and spirituality make you thinks she has all the answers. Overall this is an album definitely worth picking up. Africa may have a new star in the making.

N.Y. OIL is....
Posted: August 3, 2008, 10:43 pm by Frank
...one of my favorite "new" rappers. Though he has been on the scene for a long time as part of the UMC's, he has now gone solo and is creating a buzz in the underground. He now goes by the name N.Y. OIL. (try and figure out what the OIL part represents)
He is what you can call an activist rapper, and his music deals with issues regarding race, politics, hiphop, and just issues affecting black people. He reminds me of a KRS-One or Public Enemy(and I am not reaching when I say that.) Dude is genuinely talented and outspoken. After hearing some of his poems, interviews and his latest album Hood Treason, I was sold. No he is not Holy Hip-Hop but his music has a powerful message. -
HIV, will it ever end?
Posted: August 3, 2008, 7:43 pm by Frank
So from recent United Nations figures it appears HIV & AIDS is just as prevalent if not more prevalent than ever. 25 years after its first appearance the disease shows no signs of letting up. Though there is some good news (depending on how you view the glass) in that the number of people with HIV has gone down from 33.2 to 33 million, there is also an increase in countries like China, Russia, Germany, Britain and Australia. New data also shows the number of new HIV cases annually in the U.S is 40% higher than thought. In Kenya the picture is not any better, with 1.8 million people living with the virus.
What are your thoughts on what can be done to fight HIV? Do you think condoms are the solution(what I refer to as the asbestos suit method)? Is abstinence unrealistic, should it be scrapped?
Have you been tested, do you know our status. I have, and I do(I'm negative).
In the meantime the virus continues to threaten mankind, will we overcome it?

He'll be back....for the last time
Posted: August 3, 2008, 3:56 am by Frank
Don't mean to scare you with this poster....
....but I am a huge fan of the Terminator movies. T2 is still one of my all-time favorite movies and they will be releasing the last in the franchise soon(probably 2009). It will be called Terminator Salvation and who else but the Dark Knight himself Christian Bale will be starring as John Connor, leader of the human resistance against the cyborgs. If you are not up on the story line, I suggest you pick up all three DVDs starting with the 1984 classic to get up to speed!
What will be interesting for me will be, to see how they'll make a compelling movie without the talent of Arnold Shwarzeneggar (will he make an appearance?) Also the director will be McG( of Charlies Angels)..I know, gasp! Will he ruin the franchise or will he surprise everyone?
All I know is that this last movie better be an epic classic or frankly I'll be very dissapointed. Do you know how long us Terminator fans have waited for this last epic battle between robots and humans?(don't laugh,we all have a nerd in us.)
I can't wait! In the meantime check out a juicy first peek

Apology for slavery?
Posted: August 1, 2008, 2:31 pm by Frank
The U.S House of Representatives this past Tuesday apologized to African-Americans for slavery. The resolution was authored by Steve Cohen a white Democrat from Tennessee.
What do you think, is it too little too late? Why has this come up this year, does Obama's candidacy have anything to do with it? Should blacks demand reparations? What are your thoughts? -
The N Word
Posted: August 1, 2008, 1:21 pm by Frank
This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. Just this week I had a painful, profound experience concerning the n-word.
Is this what we come to? What's wrong with us, why would people with so much influence on their tongue use the N-Word when so many young people are influenced by them?
I will be writing more on this issue later.
