Obama vs Bradley?
Posted: October 20, 2008, 1:00 pm by Frank
Will the Bradley Effect come into play in this years U.S elections? In 1982 black California Mayor Tom Bradley lost the election to white candiate George Deukmejian even after Bradley led by wide margins in the opinion polls leading up to the vote. It appeared that white voters deceived the pollsters that they would vote for the black candidate but voted for the white one on election day. The theory is still in contention, but it is interesting to see if this effect may repeat itself in 2008. Will Obama's votes be significantly different on November 4th from what opinion polls currently tell us? It will be an interesting phenomenon to observe. Will the Bradley Effect affect Obama's chances? -

Video: Jimmy Gathu - Look,Think,Stay Alive
Posted: October 18, 2008, 4:00 pm by Frank
Just a lil' classic throwback video. For those who didnt know Jimmy Gathu was the first mainstream rapper in Kenya(Hardstone & Kalamashaka were 5,6yrs later). This video was around 1991 if I am not wrong.
This was a PSA on road safety funded by Association of Insurers during a time when Kenya's roads were a death zone. Anyone remember the name of the group? -

"Mr.Lewis Can't Lose!"
Posted: October 18, 2008, 2:20 pm by Frank
I am an avid follower of Formula 1 racing, and the debut of rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton last year has made the sport all the more interesting. As the first black F1 driver, he came close to winning a championship last year and has almost single-handedly revived interest in the sport after Ferrari-M.Schumachers years of domination. While most of my peers will be watching the latest English Premier League soccer or American Football game, I will be watching to see if Mr.Hamilton can make history. Last year Lewis was one race short of winning the championship but squandered it at the last minute. This year he is just two races away from grabbing the drivers championship again! Although I am a Lewis fan, he can be frustrating at times as he makes rookie mistakes when under pressure. Like this year he was 7pts ahead as of the last race, but made rookie errors and ended up 12th. I was about to pull my hair out! With just Brasil and China races to go and him 5pts ahead, can he keep his cool and become the firrst black F1 champion? I think it would just be great for him and Obama to be making history at the same time.
Can Mr. Hamilton do it this go-round? I will be up at 3amET Sunday morning watching the Shanghai Grand Prix.
Remaining races:
19th Oct - Shanghai GP (7a GMT)
02 Nov - Brasil GP (4p GMT)

Video: Wangari Maathai "Taking Root" trailer
Posted: October 17, 2008, 12:04 am by Frank
Taking Root tells the story of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, who led a movement in her native Kenya to safeguard the environment. Maathai became the first woman to both earn a Ph.D. and head a university department in that country. She came to international attention as founder of the Green Belt Movement, which helps restore forests while paying women to plant trees. Through the group, she has helped women plant more than 30 million trees across Africa, and has taken courageous stands

Hate rearing its head at Republican rallies
Posted: October 11, 2008, 3:42 am by Frank
Wow....I hope this isn't the core base of the Republican party. The way I see it, some people thought the black candidate would be a joke, and now that he's poised to win they're panicking and reacting hatefully. I am not really surprised, but its still sad to see either way. Change comes slowly I guess and some of these people will have to get used to the reality. They are still in denial that a black man can be their leader.

Showcasing Nai....
Posted: October 8, 2008, 7:10 am by Frank
Check out this cool website called 24 Nairobi which contains nice pics. Its aim is to showcase the real Nairobi apart from the Western sterotype of African cities. It is a Kwani? project. (click the pic below)The 24 Nairobi project is intended as a showcase of a modern African city through the eyes of its own photographers. A lot of times cities in Africa are viewed through the narrow lenses and stories of missionaries, career war photographers and aid workers.
24 Nairobi brings together local, regional and international creative professionals to evolve powerful and realistic images and narratives that would reflect the working-life diversity, cultures, energy and dimensions of cities in Africa.
This is an alternative, innovative, realistic and professional African perspective. All the photographers reside in Nairobi and grew up or now call Nairobi “home”. This aesthetic has now been captured.

Tyler Perry opens first black-owned film studio.
Posted: October 5, 2008, 11:00 pm by Frank
I watched "The Family That Preys" a few weeks ago and I liked it. I like what Tyler Perry has been doing for black cinema in the past few years. He is really pushing the envelope up and I think more black people need to support what he's doing. He has really cornered a section of the black audience and most of his movies do really well. He continues to break boundaries by opening the first black-owned studio in the U.S. located in Atlanta.
